Time is a wonderful thing. You can’t see, smell, touch, or converse with it, but you know it is there and it is always moving. The only hope you have in this crazy world is that maybe, just maybe, you can manage time. You won’t be able to control it, because time is a fierce competitor, but if you plan, and then plan again, you may be able to manage it. And managing time can be a blast.

I have been doing a solid job of managing my time lately. However, there is one major aspect of life that time has beaten me in. My thesis and time have not been getting along. My goal for November 20th of this year is to have wrestled with time and my thesis. Let us get it on!

Interns, friends, followers, anyone…..I once thought that energy and I were so close that I would never run out of it. I am here today telling you I was wrong. Fatigue has snuck upon me like a dirty thief in the new moon night. It is mildly commical because I have been getting plenty of sleep, exercise, good diet, and positive attitude. Still, I do not feel like Alex O’Brien. This is a problem. So, I am going to do the only thing I know how to do. Stay optimistic, and keep on keepin’ on.

In short, I think that sometimes, regardless of what we do or how we do it, our minds and bodies are a bit off. When these times comes we have two choices: 1. give in to your feelings and quit or rest 2. Stop, make a goal, meet the goal, and power through it. I chose number 2.

Imagination

What happens to humans as they grow up? They get taller, bigger, stronger, mature. OK, but what else?

They get a job, start a family, go out, meet new people, see new places. OK, but what else?

They read, write, add, subtract, critially think, make desicions that affect lives, become more and more well read. OK, but I’m looking for something a little deeper.

They think…..YES!

They think more than they imagine. This is the situation for today.

Why do kids imagine more than they think and adults do the opposite (generally speaking)?

The PC, cookie cutter answer; As adults we understand how to use logic and form realistic opinions and conclusions to most situations.

My answer; because work, maturity, building a family, etc. get in the way of a creative mind. As an adult, you find it easier to look forward into the future and anticipate events and circumstances to come. As a child, you were always worried about this moment…right here, right now and nothing else.

This way of thinking is a direct impact to the imagination side of our brains. We know through research and everyday living that the say ‘if ya don’t use it you lose it’ holds water when talking about synapses in the brain. If we are only thinking logically and using reason to think and get through life, than we are allowing those ‘synaptic super-highway of imagination’ deteriorate.

Long story short….use your imagination throughout your life. Just because you have a morgage and two kids doesn’t mean you can’t still have an imaginary friend! hahaha

Today the Washington Elementary Wildcats made the news! Mike Vogt, a reporter for the Idaho Press Tribune, came out to Washington yesterday to interview me. Well folks, Sunday is my 24th birthday. My Dad, Mike, drove into town last night and is going to stay through the weekend. I am extremely excited to have him here and looking forward to a great birthday.

Birthday’s are special because this is the time when you get to celebrate the gift you have given to the world….YOU!

The meaning of a Friday

Adulthood has me reflecting on the college days that I just recently expired from. It is weird, especially without baseball at the forefront of each day, when a Friday appears toward the end of another week. As a student athlete, Friday meant a long weekend at the field. It wasn’t a time to relax, party, celebrate, whatever…it was a time of demanding workouts and rigorous repetitions. After the baseball game and I said our peace and split directions weekends changed. They turned into a constant struggle to finish lesson plans, read articles, re-write drafts, and often relaxing wasn’t on the weekend agenda.
Now, as a working adult, weekends and Friday’s have taken new form, yet again. They are a break. They are used for doing anything my little heart desires. There is a country song by Steve Azar, “I don’t have to be me (’til Monday)” that fits what I am describing perfectly. Week days and weekends are completely separate. My attire, sleeping schedule, meal choice, attitude all switch when the weekend hits. It is a time to sigh in relief and get ready for some well deserved time sitting on my bumper.
In conclusion, being an adult with responsibilities, people that depend on you, etc. can be mildly overwhelming. However, you cannot beat the feeling of no weekend homework that much we can be sure of.

Blogging is the new journal. As a child, I never really wrote much down. Sure, I would pass the occasional note to the cutie sitting next to me in Mrs. Donaty’s fourth grade class…but writing in a journal, too girlie for a cool fourth grader such as myself.
Times have changed and so has that fourth grade boy. I feel like blogging is just as private as a personal journal because almost the same number of people are reading it!
Blogging is a way of venting for me. It helps me talk when there is no one there to talk. It helps me listen when there is no one talking.
It is wonderful!
